| AREA 4 POLICE CIVIC COMMITTEE EDUCATION TRUST FUND
William Clarke, President of the Jamaica Bankers Association (JBA), and President and CEO of the Bank of Nova Scotia Ltd., will officially
launch the Area 4 Police Civic Committee Education Trust Fund at the installation function of the new administration of the Rotary Club of St. Andrew North on Monday, June 27. This will be held at the Hilton Kingston Hotel at 7.00 p.m. and Commissioner of Police, Lucius Thomas, will also address the invited guests, representing members of the public and private sector.
Wayne Wray, President-Elect of the Rotary Club of St. Andrew North, notes that our children are being recruited to become agents of violence in gangs and are abused by those in our society who prey upon the most vulnerable. “The Rotary Club of St. Andrew North and the Jamaica Bankers Association will lead a drive to attract additional private sector companies and individuals to provide additional funds or sponsorship in the aggregate of at least J$1.5 million for scholarships in the Area 4 Police Civic Committee Educational Trust Fund” continued Wray. “The $1.5 million will augment the previously announced Jamaica Bankers Association sponsorship of J$1.8 million.”
Members of the Rotary Club, Interact and Rotaract Clubs (sponsored youth clubs of the Rotary Club) will assist in the development of youth leadership programmes to the students and peer counselors in the scholarship programme. Additionally, Rotarians will work as advisors over the 2005–2006 Rotary year to the Area 4 Police Civic Committee in devising strategies that will seek to improve the community relations between the Police and public.
Under the chairmanship of Mr. Ferris Ziadie, the objective of the Area 4 Police Civic Committee is to foster a greater level of communication between the police and civil society. The Area 4 Police Civic Committee Education Trust Fund is a pool of funds raised from the private sector donations to provide scholarships to children in financial need and who are in the high risk age group of 12-18 years. The children are chosen based on guidelines established by the Educational Sub-committee of the Area 4 Police Civic Committee.
The trustees of the Fund are the Jamaica Bankers Association.
