JBA TO PROVIDE SCHOLARSHIPS
Patrick Hylton, Vice President of the Jamaica Bankers Association (JBA) presented a sponsorship cheque valued at $1.8 M to Chairman of the Area 4 Police Civic Committee, Ferris Ziadie, on Wednesday, March 9, 2005 at the Area 4 Headquarters. The JBA has agreed to provide sponsorships over a three- year period (i.e., $600,000 per year) to fund scholarships of $15,000 each for 40 students. These students will comprise eight students from each of the 5 police Sub-Divisions within the Area 4 Police Division.
The scholarships are aimed at children in financial need who are in the high risk age group of 12-18 years. The children are proposed by the Police Community Relations Officer within each sub-division, in collaboration with the Principals, Form Teacher or Guidance Councillor at each school. Based on guidelines established by the Educational Sub-committee, assessments are made to determine the final scholarship awardees and the children selected.
The Area 4 Police Civic Committee was formed about 8 years ago through the efforts of then Asst. Commissioner Neville Wheatle and a group of private sector business personalities within the PSOJ and JCC, led by Mr. Ferris Ziadie. Geographically, Area 4 encompasses all of Kingston and Lower St. Andrew, with the exception of the Constant Spring/Stony Hill area. The objective of the group is to foster a greater level of communication between the police and civil society with a view to providing the police with additional support in their crime fighting initiatives and also with their public profile.
The current Chairman of the Area 4 Police Civic Committee is Mr. Ferris Ziadie, who is also a member of the PSOJ's Standing Committee on National Security (SCNS). The Educational Sub-Committee of the group is currently Co-chaired by Asst. Supt. Marlene Christie and Mr. Henry Pratt of the Jamaica Bankers Association (JBA).
