General Tips

  • Be in the know and Stay in the Know - embrace the responsibility of being aware of what are the risks you may face and how you can prevent or detect them.
  • Monitor your account activity - make sure you are frequently checking your accounts and ensuring that the activities you see were authorized by you. Reconcile your account activity with your debit and credit card slips, online transactions, cheque transactions etc.
  • Do not share your information with anyone (friend or foe) - do not share information related to your account, PIN or password
  • Protect your PIN - cover your hand when entering the PIN at the ATM and at the POS
  • Use strong, complex passwords - different platforms will vary in their password requirements; ensure that your password is complex and cannot be easily guessed by anyone. Avoid using the same password for multiple sites.
  • Stop. Think before you Click. Be wary of links in emails, social media posts etc. Especially those that may have a sense of urgency/aggression and may ask you to update account, validate, verify, click here
    Re: Emails etc. purportedly from the bank - Type your bank's URL directly in your browser, visit or call the bank directly at the number you know (and not the one provided)
  • Stop. Think before you Post. Be careful of the information you share and who you share them with.
    Can the information you share be linked to your password, PIN, security questions or location?
    Who has access to the information you share online, via social media etc.?
  • Protect all devices that connect to the internet
    Do your devices have anti-virus software and is it updated regularly?
    Are the security controls enabled on your devices (especially when using Wi-Fi)?
